Beginner Bassoon Repertoire
Currently, Dr. Koerner is developing a series of YouTube recordings to assist beginner bassoon players in learning more about solo repertoire. Using the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) manual as a guide, these videos provide a performances of individual pieces, followed by Quick Tips on how to approach learning the repertoire.
By focusing her attention on NYSSMA levels 1-4, Dr. Koerner is providing young bassoonists a chance to listen and view pieces that often are not recorded. In the quick tips section, she discusses two or three pertinent topics. These suggestions include how to approach tone quality, dynamic and articulation difficulties, technical challenges, and intonation.
The series can be found on the YouTube Channel Blaire Koerner - NYSSMA Bassoon Solos.
Since 2014, Blaire has served as the Course Facilitator for Eastman’s Institute for Music Leadership’s online music theory course - eTheory LIVE, created by Dr. Steven Laitz. She provides theory instruction and feedback to national and international students, ranging in age from high-school to life-long learners.
eTheory LIVE consists of two cumulative, interactive, online music theory courses that provide quality instruction to students with limited music theory experience. eTheory LIVE Course I & II each offer weekly video lectures, graded assignments, quizzes, and online office hours with a Course Facilitator. Together, these courses exceed the New York State High School Music Theory I requirements, and additionally, meet or exceed the requirements of many first-year college level music theory courses.
"Blaire is awesome! I Ioved interacting with her and I always looked forward to talking with her during our office hours! She really helped me understand something when I wasn’t always getting it."
- Anastasia Severson, 2017
“The eTheory LIVE course is lead tremendously by our Course Facilitator, which in our case is Blaire. She has a difficult job in that she has to manage a group of students with various backgrounds, both culturally and musically. She is there to help us understand the concepts that are being taught to us over the videos, she is there to provide feedback on the assignments we’ve completed. She’ll give us encouragement and in some cases motivation. She is the human connection between those of us around the world and the online course. It would not be the same without her. She makes the course worthwhile.”
- Robert Tung, 2015
Eastman Career and Leadership Certificate
In 2016, Eastman’s Institute for Music Leadership (IML) developed an accredited online certificate program focusing on leadership skills for musicians. Since it’s development, Blaire has been a Teaching Assistant for two courses - Career Skills for the 21st Century and Entrepreneurial Thinking. She works closely with Professor Doser, the IML Director, to discuss expectations, reading and writing interpretations, presentations, and grading.
