Blaire K.S. Koerner
Bassoonist, Teacher, Entrepreneur
Dr. Blaire Koerner is a freelance bassoonist, educator, and entrepreneur. She completed her Masters of Music (2015) and Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Bassoon Performance and Literature (2019) at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York.
At a time when classical music is being diminished from American childhood education and experience, Dr. Koerner strives to re-enforce music's importance and availability through a variety of efforts and collaborations including innovative performances, educational initiatives, and technologically-infused endeavors.
As a New York State bassoonist, Blaire has performed in a variety of large ensembles, operas, musicals, recitals, and studio recordings. Some ensembles she’s worked with include Ensemble Signal, Society for Chamber Music Rochester and Syracuse’s orchestra Symphoria. She belongs to the Eastman Community Music School faculty wind quintet and plays in a variety of chamber settings focusing on outreach and community engagement. In addition, Blaire has performed internationally in Austria, Italy, Germany, France, and Switzerland with American Music Abroad and the contemporary soundSCAPE Festival.
A seasoned bassoon teacher, Dr. Koerner maintains a private studio of all ages and experience levels. She is the adjunct bassoon instructor at Syracuse University's Setnor School of Music. In addition, she teaches bassoon and wind chamber ensembles at the Eastman Community Music School (ECSM), in Rochester, NY, where she recently received the Jack L. Frank Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2016. Currently, Dr. Koerner is developing a YouTube series to assist beginner bassoon players in learning NYSSMA solo repertoire. And, from 2015-2018, Blaire taught secondary bassoon lessons at the Eastman School of Music.
An avid entrepreneur, Blaire actively pursues opportunities to understand all aspects of the music field and to hone the necessary skills in a “Do-It-Yourself” market. Blaire is a Board Member of Rochester’s Pegasus Early Music, has been published in The Eastman Case Studies, and works to develop internationally available online courses which focus on both theory and entrepreneurial studies. Blaire is a career advisor at Eastman’s Office of Careers and Professional Development and University of Rochester's arts community at the Gwen M Greene Center for Career Education and Connections, where she assists students in exploring their musical goals and preparing for a lifetime of music.
